Artist's Mission Statement:
"Hi. I'm Hesh, and I make art about human connection and bewilderment. Connection to each other, to place, to time and space. But also to our communal confusion, as we stand, existentially, looking into the void, searching for meaning and reaching for wholeness in front of the impossibly vast and unknown universe. Through themes of organization and division - politics, history, religion, and culture - I use tools like technology, science, and, of course, art itself, which I believe is born of this uniquely human desire to perceive the imperceivable.
My practice spans photography, painting, design, and some small amount of writing. I enjoy working across digital and analog formats, often in combination. With my professional history in both commercial and institutional art, I have experience in two distinct modes: the metaphorical 'question' and the prescriptive 'answer'. An artistic inquiry needs space for ambiguity, interpretation, and collaboration, while commercial work requires clarity and efficiency. This duality informs my vision, as much by contradiction as by continuity.
I grew up in a working-class home with an artistic and academically minded single mother who encouraged my creativity, even as we struggled with necessity and practical realities. Entering the workforce early, I learned to balance financial demands with creative ambition. My years in commercial lighting, photography, and directing have given me both discipline and the freedom to cultivate my visual language.
Curiosity, study, and a nomadic life, full of travel, exploration, and diverse experiences, fuel and shape my practice. The resulting work is eclectic and, yes, even a bit chaotic. However, this chaos mirrors the tension of existence: the search for certainty within the vast unknown. Through the use of symbolic contrasts and themes like ritual, philosophy, and mythology, I explore the nature of understanding, communication, and human connection."
